The New South Wales Police Basketball Club is an amateur, self funded, sporting club which consists of about sixty New South Wales Police Force employees, both men and women, who come together annually to compete in the Australasian Police Basketball Championships.
The first Australasian Basketball Championships were conducted in 1978 when a team from the Victorian Police Force travelled to Sydney for a game against a team from the New South Wales Police Force. Since this time the Championships have been held annually, and have grown to include over four hundred competitors from all policing jurisdictions across Australia and New Zealand.
The Championships are generally held in the month of October, and consist of a week of games and social functions. Each year the Championships are hosted by a different jurisdiction, in a different location.
Competitors come from a wide range of skill levels, from former professional players who now work for the various policing jurisdictions, to social players who only pick up a basketball once a year to compete and enjoy the social side of the competition.
The Championships consist of three separate divisions across both the men’s and women’s competitions. The New South Wales Police Basketball Club routinely has three men’s and two women’s teams competing across these divisions each and every year.
Apart from being a foundation club within the Championships, the New South Wales Police Basketball Club has a rich and successful history, with teams from the club winning numerous championships across all playing divisions over the years the championship has run, and a number of our members being both life members and members of the Australasian Police Basketball Hall of Fame.
Our club is constantly growing and we are actively seeking new members, regardless of skill level, to join us as we tour, compete and build long lasting memories and relationships. Everyone is welcome, and once you come to one championships we guarantee you will want to attend many more!
